Shackleton Epic Expedition

Be a part of a one-off expedition to the ends of the earth - the Shackleton Epic, possibly the biggest adventure yet.

The Shackleton Epic is a 56-day journey from Punta Arenas, Chile, down to the Antarctic Peninsula, via Elephant Island and South Georgia, finishing in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  So if you're a true lover of legends, and you want to be a part of this heroic adventure, then read on. We have a very limited number of spaces available so get in quick.  a brave few have managed to replicate the 16 day ocean crossing and climb over South Georgia.  Tim Jarvis and his crew are attempting to recreate this legendary journey, from Elephant Island to South Georgia, and then across a mountain range to Stromness.

We are offering you the opportunity to travel alongside the expedition on the official support vessel – a tall ship similar in dimensions to the Endurance, the TS Pelican is the perfect ship to accompany this re-enactment.  The expedition sets sail from Punta Arenas, Chile on January 3, 2013 and is expected to reach its final destination of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil late in February.

The story of Sir Ernest Shackleton, and the plight of his Endurance crew, is one of history's greatest tales of survival. After losing their ship to the ice, the 28-crew members were stranded on an ice floe without hope of rescue. Taking to the lifeboats, the men rowed for five days straight, and made it to the inhospitable and exposed shores of Elephant Island. Realising their ominous fate if they remained marooned in such a frozen purgatory, Shackleton, along with five of his men, sailed one of the lifeboats – the James Caird – over 800 nautical miles through the roughest seas known to man, to reach a remote whaling station on South Georgia Island. Shackleton and two others then successfully navigated their exhausted, malnourished and frostbitten bodies across a mountain range, trekking for over 36 hours to find rescue at Stromness.

Itsukushima Shrine, Japan

Itsukushima Shrine  is on the island of  Itsukushima (popularly known as Miyajima) in the city of  Hatsukaichi in Hiroshima Prefecture in Japan. The shrine complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Because the island itself has been considered sacred, in order to maintain its purity commoners were not allowed to set foot on Miyajima through much of its history. In order to allow pilgrims to approach, the shrine was built like a pier over the water, so that it appeared to float, separate from the land, and therefore existed in a liminal state between the sacred and the profane.  The shrine’s signature red entrance gate, or torii, was built over the water for much the same reason. Commoners had to steer their boats through the torii before approaching the shrine.
Miyajima is a small island less than an hour outside the city of Hiroshima.  Miyajima is one of the crown jewels of Japan, and certainly one of its finest views.  Ranked #13 of 29 things to do in Hiroshima by Lonely Planet travellers.  best time to go is in the Fall.

Historic Route 66, USA

Route 66 has become an iconic symbol of the great American road trip. Affectionately known as the ‘Mother Road’, the former Highway 66 was the first paved highway linking America from east to west. Our journey follows this road, taking us from one great city, Chicago, to another, Los Angeles. Along the way we stop at cities that all have stories to tell, places such as St Louis, Oklahoma City, Santa Fe and Las Vegas.

We also visit centres of country music, pay homage to the great Texan steak, meet Native Americans living in their reservation and experience that great natural icon of the American southwest – the mighty Grand Canyon. Following in the footsteps of John Steinbeck and Jack Kerouac and with the lyrics and music of Bob Dylan humming in our ears, we are sure to discover a journey of adventure and the freedom of the open road.
14 days starting in Chicago, Illinois, USA and ending in Los Angeles, California, USA.
